Thailand diaries #2: Chiang Mai, Ayutthaya & The Islands

Now that Marijs is in Thailand, it’s about time that I post part two of my own adventures there. Feels a bit like stealing her thunder as I’ve had ten months to do this and only now get around to it, but I hope it will maybe give her (and you) some more travel inspiration!  I’ve tried to keep it concise, which resulted in a post of more than 50 pictures. Oh well… I guess that just means Thailand is too beautiful.

Like many people before me, I wouldn’t really recommend going to Phuket. I did, however, enjoy the trips we took from there: a dinner cruise to the edge of  ”James Bond Island”  & ferry to Koh Phi Phi. That place is heaven! I’d go back to Thailand only to spend more time there.

The boyfriend and I spent our last week in Thailand on Koh Samui because we really needed to rest.  It seemed like a great place to not move around too much and lie flat on our backs reading a book. Looking back however, we stayed at two different hotels, took a trip to Koh Tao and Koh Pha Ngan and went to a variety of restaurants and beaches. Ah, we just can’t sit still. We mostly stayed close to Bophut, a (former) fisherman’s village that attracted a lot of French immigrants, which resulted in a really nice restaurant scene. We felt Bophut was a little less flashy than Chaweng and a little less touristy (that’s all relative in Thailand, I know)  than Lamai beach, so it was right up our alley. I’d recommend Bophut strongly to couples, but If you’re backpacking, I think somewhere a little more lively may be nicer.

  2. There are many islands you can visits during your stay in koh Samui that’s only 20-30 mins or a couple of hours boat rides away. there’s Angthong marine national park, koh Tao, koh nang yaun and koh phangan.
