Guest Post: Sea, Sand & Beauty

When Patricia and Marijs first asked me to write a post for their blog Ella and Louise, a double feeling fell over me. My heart was screaming “Yes, yes, yes, let’s do this!”, while my head was more realistic and I had to ask myself “Can I do this?” . But as you are reading this post, you can guess how that battle ended.

My inspiration came to me while I was at the belgian coast, while walking on the beach and struggling with hair flying everywhere. How do you keep yourself elegant with all that wind, salt and water? Well, you just use it to your advantage.

Instead of staying inside or just taking a walk when you wake up, put on your bathing suit. Yes, you can do this – even at the belgian coast. The first thing you do when your feet touch the sand is enjoy the feeling you get now. Feel that sand between your toes, the wind in your hair and the renewed oxygen in your body. Then the brave part begins. Take off that jacket/pants/tshirt/… and give yourself a mild scrub with the sand. You best do this on dry skin, because the efficiency increases that way. But be careful, don’t hurt yourself, you still want to have an epidermis (upper layer of the skin) after this mini-me-spa. You can also scrub your face but please do not do this when you have sensitive skin. Trust me, that is not a good plan.

When all this is done, it is time to face the sea water. Just run into the water, let the 5 year old inner child loose. Once in the water, go far enough, you want to get all the sand off. And while you are in there also try to ‘wash’ your hair in the sea water. The salt will give it a nice beach look later that day.

After this water session, you go home and take a nice shower. Don’t shower in water that is too hot. This is never good since it has a very drying effect on your skin. And if possible, don’t use plain soap. Instead a nice smelling shower gel (normal skin) or oil (dry skin) will do a better job. You can rinse your hair, but don’t wash it with shampoo. Otherwise you will lose that beach effect. Just spray a little bit of repair spray on the ends of your hair and make a braid. Leave it to dry like this and at the end of the day, your hair will have those nice curly waves. As for your body, use a moisturizing lotion after the shower, preferably with a holiday scent, you will thank me for that last one. Trust me.
