Guest post: 7 hangover cures

Through the years, we’ve had a lot of fun with Phebe. There were bar nights in Leuven, weekends at the seaside and home parties where the living room served as a dance floor. And a lot of times there was alcohol. And the next day, there was the hangover. Luckily, Phebe has some chemical knowhow and thus some of the best hangover cures. Speaking of an excellent party friend! We’re not people who like to keep these secrets to ourselves, so Ella & Louise is proud to present…

Weekends with an overload of fun and alcohol. We’ve all been there and we have all regretted (some of) them. Who has never woken up with just one thing on there mind? ‘I’m never drinking again’!  Until the next party presents itself…

First some chemistry: why do we feel like we feel when we drink? What happens in and with our body when it comes to alcohol? The major processes that alcohol provokes concern our day-after-naussea and the well known dehydrated feeling. Naussea is derived from the demolition of alcohol in the liver into acetaldehyde. After this that intermediar product is broken down to acetic acid, which then is transformed into water and CO2. But it is that same acetaldehyde that gives us the feeling of naussea! No way of escaping it then you say? Just keep on reading….

Alcohol also blocks the manufacture of vasopressin (an antidiuretic hormon), which in its way blocks the reuptake of water into the body… And yes there you have your dehydratation in the morning!

Therefore, I give you THE LIST! Food and herbs that prevent, cure or just simply make you forget your hangover.

1. A banana a day keeps your headache away

Bananas contain a high level of magnesium. This mineral relaxes the blood vessels which, in turn, decreases the pounding headache you’ve woken up with. Even better is to make a banana milkshake. The milk rehydrates your body.

2. Omega-3 fatty acids

Yes sometimes fat is good. Women, embrace this moment. Eat plenty of fat fish (salmon, tuna, …), nuts (doesn’t matter which ones) and use oil for baking and preparing salades. Why? These foods all contain a high dose of omega-3 fatty acids, which break down the radicals (cause of premature aging of cells and damiging of DNA) released during the demolition of ethanol (also known as our beloved alcohol) by the liver.

3. Eggs

These contain cysteïne, an amino acid which immedialty attacks the negetive effects of acetaldehyde (the substance that makes you feel like spending the day in the bathroom by yourself). However, this has never been scientificly proven.

4. Lemons and grapefruit

Fruits that contain vitamin C will also help releaving some distress caused by drinking. Vitamin c is known as an antioxidant, one of the best of its kind. Again, it will help diminish the free radicals in your body. Preferably put a couple slices of lemon in a glass of water and let it soak in for a while. Don’t put too many lemons in your water, otherwise you will spend the day in your bathroom anyway.

5. Dandelion

The leaves of this flower work as a diuretic, which advances the drain of toxines, released during the degradation process of alcohol. You can use the leaves in a salade or pancakes.

6. Water

This is not a new one of course! Drink enough during the day, it will rinse your body completely.

And then there is one more tip that I can give you. It doesn’t involve any food or drinking. It is the most fun part of it all.

7. Have sex

This gives you a energyboost and it helps to evaporate the alcohol more efficiently, which causes all the downsides of drinking to vanish like snow in the sun.
